- Description: Drainage Pipe Placement - Pennsylvania Departmentof Transportation - Video VH-122 - This video demonstrates proper excavation, compaction and filling for pipe installation in highway drainage maintenance. Site preparation and pipe placement are shown, but the determination of proper pipe slope and grade is not. The excavation area is marked and the old pipe is removed with a backhoe; a smooth trench is created with squared sides and a firm subbase. Loose material is laid to cushion and cradle the pipe, then compacted. A classroom demonstration shows the importance of compaction to prevent pipe failure.
